What are cookies?
A cookie is a small text file that is downloaded on to your computer when accessing certain websites. Cookies enable a website to, among other things, store and retrieve information about a user's browsing habits or a computer's history of activities and, depending on the information they contain and the way you use your computer, they can be used to identify the user.
Types of cookies
The most common types of cookies that you may encounter when you browse the Internet are the following:
- Publisher's own cookies: those that are sent to the user's computer or domain managed by the publisher, and from which it provides the service requested by the user.
- Third-party cookies: those that are sent to the user's computer or domain that is not managed by the publisher, but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies.
- Session cookies: these are a specific type designed to collect and store data while the user accesses a web page.
- Persistent cookies: these are a type in which data continue to be stored in the terminal and can be accessed and processed for a defined period of time (ranging from a few minutes to several years) by the person responsible for the cookie.
- Analysis cookies: those handled by the publisher or by third parties, which enable us to quantify the number of users and to carry out the measurement and statistical analysis of the use of the service offered by the users themselves. In order to do this, the user's web browsing behaviour is analyzed, in order to improve the range of products or services offered.
- Advertising cookies: those that facilitate the management, in the most effective way possible, of advertising spaces that, in this case, the publisher has included on a website, application or platform from which the requested service is provided, based on criteria such as the edited content, or the frequency with which ads are shown.
